The client wanted a reproduction of a room from an actual Italian Villa in Monticello, Italy with decorative painted ornament and wanted a Tiepolo reproduction in the center.
We found some good reference photos for inspiration, In this case we used photos from a villa in Monticello.
Mural artist CT – Italian villa inspired Mural project in CT.
First We make a maquette drawing of the space and its design.
Next I made a few sample panels for design and arrangement and color, doing one panel and the boarder for clients approval.
I made some changes for the client, taking out some creepy looking creatures. They wanted some rabbits, dolphins and strawberry’s.
The boarder was basically a replica of the original.
On this project I needed 125 ft. of boarder. That’s a lot of border to paint by hand! So I cut my own stencils for the egg and dart, the ribbon etc. to block in the colors for the boarder.
Here is my excellent crew having at it. Then the detailing had to be done by hand by myself and my son David. Everything was done in my studio on a special coated printing paper, so we were basically making a custom wallpaper, rather than painting on canvas or muslin. Its a lot easier than working directly on walls and ceilings.
The center piece are figures from a Tiepolo piece. We had to make a border for that too we did that in quarters then placed it around the circular mural.
We made four pieces of the circular boarder for the centerpiece.
Once completed we installed on sight.
We put a wash over the whole piece to give it an aged look.
