This was a really interesting project. This classic piece of religious art has been reproduced many times. What Phil and I wanted to do was to do a reproduction of the original in its condition today, We want the art work to be antiqued, so I stared out by texturing the board ( This was painted on wood) with ropy paint (paint with powdered plaster or compound mixed in it) rolled, brushed and stippled on, two coats to give it nice texture. This mixture had a medium brown/red tone and was then painted over with a off white tone like the original, so after the art work was finished I could then sand through the work leaving reveling the under coat and the texture giving the painting an aged and distressed patina. Even the gold leaf in the halos were distressed.
